The Africa in the School’s Residency Program, currently in its fifth consecutive year at the Bloomingdale School/P.S. 145 in Harlem, is curriculum set in motion. These yearlong classes engage students in African culture and heritage through dance, music, and storytelling while integrating lessons in history, the social sciences, math, and the arts. The program simultaneously develops children’s physical coordination, concentration, and interpersonal skills. The current program reaches nearly 300 children. In addition to dance and music, the program now includes classes on African mask making and beadwork because of the useful and easily incorporated links to math curriculum. Teachers have been thrilled by the connections made to lessons in the classroom, as well as the opportunity to expose children to exciting arts programming.
