PORTUGAL
In 1996 Batoto Yetu established a successful satellite program in Lisbon, Portugal, with a goal to reach out to the first generation of children born of Angolan parents who had fled to Portugal during the civil wars. Most of those children live in a state of cultural limbo, severed from their African roots but not fully integrated into Portuguese society. With the help of the Portuguese government and the Luso-American Development Foundation, Batoto Yetu established ongoing programming in Lisbon, working with children of African descent. We have watched these children flourish in an environment that celebrates their connections to both Africa and Portugal and enriches their sense of personal and cultural identity
